Pool route valuation: what actually drives value

Routes2 min readUpdated By POOLIO Editorial Team

The short answer

A pool route is valued mainly on its recurring monthly revenue, adjusted for how long customers stay, how tightly the stops cluster, what it costs to serve them, how concentrated the revenue is, and how well the numbers can be verified. Two routes with identical revenue can be worth very different amounts once those factors are counted.

Start with recurring revenue — the right kind

Only revenue that repeats on a service agreement belongs in the base. Green-pool recoveries, repairs and equipment sales are real income, but a buyer cannot count on them the same way. Separate them before quoting any multiple.

Why density matters so much

A buyer pays for the margin they can keep. If one route is serviced in four hours and another takes seven because of drive time, the second costs far more to run at the same revenue, so a buyer can pay less for it. Measuring service minutes against drive minutes on a real day is one of the most useful valuation inputs.

Estimate a range, not a single number

Any single universal multiple is a guess. A better approach is to estimate a range from your own retention, density and cost, and to be able to show the records behind each input. The free calculator below shows the range and every assumption it used; it is an estimate for conversation, not an appraisal or financial advice.

Fixable gaps that add value before a sale

  • Put every account on an accurate recurring price
  • Capture service history and chemistry consistently
  • Record equipment per body of water
  • Reprice or release accounts that lose money after drive time

Frequently asked questions

Does POOLIO tell me what my route is worth?
No. POOLIO provides a calculator that estimates a range from your inputs and shows its assumptions. It is not an appraisal, and on POOLIO Exchange sellers set their own asking price.
Is a pool route valued on revenue or profit?
Conversations usually start from recurring monthly revenue, but what a buyer can pay depends on the margin left after the cost to serve the stops.
