Pool route valuation: what is my pool route actually worth?
Route values get thrown around as a single multiple of monthly revenue, which is why so many deals fall apart during diligence. What a buyer can pay depends on how much of the revenue is genuinely recurring, how long customers stay, how tightly the stops cluster, and what it costs to serve them.

What moves the number
Five inputs that decide the range
- Step 1
Recurring revenue
The monthly amount you actually bill on a repeating basis. One-off repairs and green pool recoveries are real income, but they are not the same asset as a recurring service agreement.
- Step 2
Retention
How long an average customer stays. A route that loses a fifth of its accounts every year is worth less than one that loses a twentieth, even at identical revenue.
- Step 3
Density
Stops per hour, not stops per week. Tight clusters cost less to serve, so more of the revenue survives as profit for the buyer.
- Step 4
Cost to serve
Chemicals, labor, fuel and vehicle cost against those stops. Buyers price the margin they can keep, not the revenue they collect.
- Step 5
Concentration and risk
If three customers are a third of the revenue, that is a different risk profile than two hundred evenly-priced accounts.
- Step 6
Evidence
A number a buyer can verify from service records survives diligence. A number from memory gets discounted.
Operational outcomes
Why owners run the numbers first
You stop guessing
An estimate range with stated assumptions is a better negotiating position than a rumor about multiples.
You find the fixable gaps
Unpriced accounts and missing service history are usually the cheapest value you will ever add.
You can decide what to sell
Sometimes the answer is a pocket of far-side accounts, not the whole route.
POOLIO organizes the work and the follow-up. Results depend on your pricing, your route, and how your team uses the system — POOLIO does not guarantee revenue outcomes.
Buyer checklist
Before you quote a price to anybody
- Separate recurring service revenue from one-off repair revenue
- Know your annual customer loss rate, not an impression of it
- Measure drive time between stops on a real service day
- Confirm every account has an accurate recurring price recorded
- Know your cost per stop including chemicals, labor and fuel
- Be able to show service history for the accounts you are selling
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How is a pool route usually valued?
Most conversations start from recurring monthly revenue and adjust from there. Retention, route density, how much of the revenue is genuinely recurring, and the operating cost to serve the stops all move the number. Anyone quoting a single universal multiple is guessing on your behalf.
Does POOLIO tell me what my route is worth?
No. The free calculator produces an estimate range from the numbers you enter and shows the assumptions it used. It is a starting point for a conversation, not an appraisal, and it is not financial advice.
Why does density change the value?
Two routes with identical revenue are not worth the same if one is serviced in four hours and the other takes seven because of drive time. Density changes the cost to serve, and cost to serve changes what a buyer can pay.
What makes a route worth less than the owner expects?
Accounts with no recorded pricing, revenue concentrated in a few large customers, heavy one-off repair revenue counted as recurring, chronic skips, and no service history a buyer can inspect.
What should I fix before selling?
Get every account on an accurate recurring price, capture service history and chemistry consistently, record equipment per body of water, and know your real cost per stop including drive time.
POOLIO Exchange in brief
POOLIO Exchange is a pool route marketplace where pool-service owners buy and sell single pool accounts, account bundles, full pool routes and pool service business assets. Public listings show only privacy-safe operating data; customer identities stay private until a deal is agreed.
How it works
- Seller lists accounts, a route or a business with an asking price they set.
- Buyers browse pool routes for sale free, with no login required.
- An eligible buyer makes an offer; offers and counters stay in one deal room.
- Both sides sign structured agreements covering price, transferred revenue and handoff.
- Closing follows a structured workflow designed for licensed third-party escrow handling.
- POOLIO Flow hands the operating data to the buyer.
Pricing. List for free. Pay only when it sells. Success Fee: one month of the recurring monthly service revenue being transferred. No Exchange subscription fee, and nothing owed unless your transaction closes.
Not a broker. POOLIO is a technology marketplace, not a broker, agent, escrow company or lender. Buyers and sellers make their own deal and decide what professional help they need.
What transfers. POOLIO Flow is designed to transfer eligible operating data — customers, properties, bodies of water, equipment, service history, route and schedule placement, and service pricing. Payment credentials, autopay authorizations and the seller's accounting history do not transfer.
